In 1642 Abel Tasman arrived in NZ mapped a line around the edge of NZ and called it Nova Zealandia but left shortly after meeting Maori. 100 years later James Cook ( Captain cook ) arrived in 1769 with a chief navigator called Tupaia and they bought pigs, ship rats , potato and disuses. They later started a musket war ( musket is a type of gun ) it ended in the late 1830. After the musket wars the ratio from Pakeha to Maori was 1 Pakeha to 40 Maori.
People thought There was land under NZ called Terra exstalis incognito.

ReplyDeleteThis is a good summary of the Early Europeans in Aotearoa. I'm glad that you included that the explorers were looking for a big continent in the southern hemisphere which they thought existed to balance out all of the land in the northern hemisphere.
