Explains SHU

Food Theory 'Beat the Heat'

5 Facts about chilli

1. The scovile heat unit scale (SHU) was invented in 1912 by pharacist Wilbur scovile in an attempt to find a heat producing ointment.

2.The burning sensation is mainly caused by the chemical capsaicin. Capsaicin is found in tiny glands in the chilis placenta, when you eat a chili the capsaisin is released into your saliva and then binds to TRPC1 recepotors in out mouth and tounge.

3.Chillis are considered a fruit, they are consideered a fruit because they are a member of the nightshade (Solanaceac) family and they are related to tomatos, cherrys and eggplants.

4.Some chillis are used in different medical things like nasel spray and dermal patches.

5.Only mammals are sensitive to the chemical capsaicin making it so fish arnt effected by chilli peppers.

Hypothisis
I think by drinking milk it will remove the heat because it has a chemical in it that binds to capsasin reducing the heat.

  • popsicle stick/tooth pick
  • Drinks- soda, water, milk
  • Timer

Instructions
  1. Get your equipment ready
  2. get a drop of hot sauce on your toothpick/popsicle stick

  5. after 2 mins, drink your drink
  6. after 5 mins, how hot is your mouth
  7. repeat the experiment but with a different drink
Results
How hot was the chilli after 2 mins
5/10 (water) (Tane)
7/10 (coke) (Tane)
3/10 (milk) ( Me)

how hot was the chilli after you drank your liquid (Coke, Milk or water)
2/10(water) (Tane)
4/10(coke) (Tane)
0/10(milk)(Me)

Persuasive writing (Fireworks ahould be banned)

Hello everyone,

For the first week of term in writing we were working on our persuasive writing skills, we were told to write about wether we thought firework should be banned or not. I worked with Isabella to make this peice of writing about why we belive fire works should be banned.

Fireworks should be banned

Do you like fireworks?

Well here are our reasons why we believe, you shouldn't use them

Although fireworks are in fact very pretty and can bring others closer it does pose a hazard when it comes to flammability since it releases sparks of fire from the gunpowder that if it’s around grass if there's enough of it can set the ground aflame. Since most people don’t keep water or a fire extinguisher around them while doing this it can be deadly.

Secondly, fireworks contain materials that are able to be used in other circumstances and can be useful (like different chemicals). If we use these in fireworks we could run out of the things used to make them when we need them in different situations. They also tend to cost a lot of money which can be used for other, more important things. Considering in this day and age everything is getting more expensive (which will include fireworks) putting that money into a bank account to save it would be much better in the long run.

Thirdly, fireworks tend to be loud, really loud. Loud noises tend to be bad for animals and can send them into shock, hurting them and maybe even killing them. Different animals can be useful in terms of nature and to society so if they die that would be very bad.

Thus we believe that fireworks should be banned

2.divide the agar in half by drawing a line on the lid

3.wipe swab into agar solution

4. put the petri dish into the incubator for a week to allow the bacteria to grow

Hello everyone, welcome to my blog

Today in one of our classes we were told to use SPILES (Social, physical, intellectual, likes, emotional, success)to tell people what we did during the hollidays. Here is what I came up with.

Social:My cousin and aunt came down from Wellington and I hung out with them. We went bowling, laser strike and we even went to hanmer springs.

Physical:I scootered to my holiday program and to the bus stop every day.
Intellectual:I read a few books and did math equations when I was bored.
Likes:I enjoyed hanging out with my cousin because we are very similar and get along well.

Emotional:Most of my holidays I was fine though there were some parts where I felt stressed, anxious and sad.

Success:I started learning Japanese again and I know a few basic phrases now.
