Today for Hur 1 literacy we had to choose 2 activiys from the list to do, my first task I decided to boggle. For this task we had to find as many words from 'Paralympics' as we could. I managed to get 24 words with a total of 65 points, how well do you think you could do?

Science on the ice

This term in Hur 1 (Nga tangata literacy) we have been learning about antartica. Today we were tasked to read one of the texts and asked to answer the questions on the site, here are my answers.

The text 'Science on the ice' was written by Neil Silverwood.

They were going to Scott base (NZs base in antartica).

His job was to photograph antartica, ECW stand for Extreme cold weather and they are jackets made for extreme cold weather.

The purpose of his trip is to document the set up for a science project.

The reason that the data the scientists are collecting is so important is because it estimates how bad global warming is allowing them to figure out how to reduce it.

The way they find a safe path for the convoy to travel is  by using a machine called a ground penatration radar, and even then they make sure not to leave the vehicle without a rope.

One of the challenges that they face is doing the dishes, because of how cold it is they have to swirl warm water around the bowl then quickly drink it up ( In the text it states that they call this dish soup), another chalenge that they faced was figuring out how much fuel to bring.

An interesting fact I found throughout the artical is that they have to pack enough fuel for a small car to travel around the globe 12 times (33,000 liters of fuel), another fact I learnt was the way they did the dishes, one last interesting thing is that they travel an average human running speed.

Chilli tasting

deffinition

The chemical in chillis that make them hot is called capsasin.

6 hottest kinds of pepper

(SHU = Schovile heat units)

Carolina Reaper 2,200,000 SHU

  • Trinidad Moruga Scorpion 2,009,231 SHU

  • 7 Pot Douglah 1,853,936 SHU

  • 7 Pot Primo 1,469,000 SHU

  • Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T” 1,463,700 SHU

  • Naga Viper 1,349,000 SHU

The schovile heat scale
The schovile heat scale works by measuring the amount of schoviles (Pungency of chilli peppers) in a chilli pepper showing how hot a chilli is.

Aim
To see what is the best way to cool down the hot chilli tastein your mouth when eating chilli.

Hypothisis
I think that by using Milk I will be able to reduce (or even remove) the chilli taste from my mouth because of the casein in milk. Capsasin in non soluable as it is an oil although milk does disolve it.

Equipment:
1. Milk
2.Water
3.Coke
4.Tasting cup
5. Chilli

Conclusion
Milk had a small efect on the chilli imidiatly and completly got rid of it after  3 minutes.
Coke also had a small effect on the chilli imediatly, then after 3 minutes it disapered all together
Water had no effect imediatly, after 3 minutes it removed the taste slightly

Milk would be the best option for you if you have it otherwize reach for flat coke (or any other flat soda).

Milk could be a solution when eating spicy food because milk helps your mouth handle capsain (the oily chemical compound in chili or anything spicy), capsain binds to a receptor in the tounge and creates a burning sensation, casein the protein found in mill and other dairy products binds to the capsasin and washes it away.

Drama: Using voice

Today in drama we were tlaking about voices and using them, we talked about the range of voices and the types if voices, we were told to look on our slides and explainwhat the different types of voices were and find what type of voice we have, here is mine.

There are 4 different types of singing voice, what are they? Name and find an example of each.

S: Soprano: Highest singing part for a female voice

A: Alto: Lowest singing part for a female voice.

T:Tenor: Highest singing part for a male voice.

B:Bass: Lowest singing part for a male

What do you think your voice is now? Alto but able to reach Soprano.

Blind taste testing (Science)

Today in Science we did a blind taste test, we did this to see if we could identify the difference between swwe, biter, sour and salty. We had to work in pairs, I worked with Isabella, one of us had to be blindfolded and the other had to guide them around , Isabella was first and I was second (taste testing).

Equipment

1. Samples (1-9)

2. Blindfold glasses (we used glasses and paper)

3.Recording chart

4.Ice cream sticks

Method

1. Get saftey glasses and make a blindfold

2.Set up your charts make sure the person knows where to record your responses.

3.Using an icecream stick taste the samples

4.Record your results (including what you thought it was and the taste (bitter, sweet, sour, etc)
